Can someone please help me? I am at wit's end!

I find my ancestors in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. In 1880, I
find the address along with the street. In 1850, '60, and '70, I find only the
address without the street. In the census of 1880 and thereafter, I have
found the street name written sideways in the middle of the page in the extreme
left, outside the margin. I think you all know what I mean. How was the
street name indicated in those earlier census'? Whats the point of putting an
address without a street?

I have tried viewing images many pages before and after the page that they
appear. I find no street name. Am I missing something? Somebody have mercy
and enlighten me.

Thanks,
Judy
