Hi,
Lighters were boats and barges that were in NY Harbor. Some going back and
forth between New York and New Jersey.
There were Lighter Capts (who were in charge of the boat) and Lightermen who
worked on the boats.
I had a number of them in my family also. They mostly lived in Red Hook.
