To verify your family story about this ship you must know the date of
its arrival and the name of the vessel. Once that is established, you
may be able to use LLoyd's to find a report of the condition of the
ship. If the immigrants arrived after 1852, the New York Times would
have an account in the Marine Intelligence section of the daily paper.

Your first goal should be to locate the immigration. Have you used the
Ancestry.com access to immigrant ships arriving in New York post 1852
which is available for no fee or a small fee at your nearest LDS Family
History Center? Or you could try the Famine immigrant list available on
line from NARA. This latter list covers the period prior to 1852, but
not as far back as 1835. It is, I believe, a compilation of the same
Irish Immigrants in the series Famine Immigrants.

You will most likely come up with a handful of likely Fitzgeralds, but
you can then check the ship's manifest and find a ship with a Captain
Sweeney. Or not. Either way, you can prove or disprove this family story.
