>Hi Everyone,
. . . .. This is definitely the person we are looking for and she did
use both MacNair and McNair. If I went to the Archives, would I have any
hassle to see the record personally or would the employee tell me that
they
would have to look it up and send it to me? TIA

Hi, Kathleen,
All the records are on microfilm at the Municipal Archives; and that
is what is consulted whether it is you or an employee.
You locate the record on the film and then give the roll and
a filled out form to them to make the copy. You pay on the spot
and (depending on time of day) can get your copy before
leaving.
Since you have the certificate number, it is a one-step process
for you. If you did not have it, all the indexes are there and could
be checked to find the certificate. You pay a flat rate for using
the film in the room for one day, and you pay per certificate
(with seal) you get copied.
So, you could do this by mail (forms on their web site).
However, I urge you to at least once go to the Municipal Archives
and do research for a day (M-Thurs are full days). Why stop
with this birth certificate when you can also search all siblings'
births, all marriages, and all deaths? Once you pay to enter
the room, you have unlimited access to the records. You can
transcribe for free, don't need to order every document you look
at. If you do this, I suggest you make a form for yourself to collect
all pieces of information on the certificates--addresses, doctors,
funeral homes, cemeteries, ministers, churches, etc.
I hear the staff there now is much kinder than formerly (not so
exciting, ha ha), and the research experience is unparalleled.
