Elizabeth,

When I applied online to NARA for the Civil War pension records, I included the pension application number that I found on Ancestry's Civil War Pension Index for both the widow and the veteran. This photo image of a card is none too clear. I think I provided an incorrect number for the veteran, but somehow the NARA researcher found all the pension documents under her name. She was still dealing with the federal government in 1940, trying to get some more money from them for his military service and burial! They finally paid her about $56 for the burial.

May you could try again with NARA, this time just using the widow's name and other information you have from the Ancestry data base. How legible is the pension card?

What I'm not sure how to do now is find any record of Israel Newton's military service. He used an alias as John Scott. There are a bunch of John Scotts in the Ancestry.com index. This part I'm not sure how to handle.

Vivian,

I am green with envy <grin>

When I asked for the pension file, I gave them the soldiers name as well as
his widows. She was the one who filed for the pension per records found on
ancestry by a cousin.

Any suggestions?
