To Elizabeth and Judy,
<<A wonderful source for this the website: www.elderweb.com. There is a wealth of information on that site, as well as a list of approximately 10 homes in Brooklyn, which incidentally, is how I found out the my home was rather large, with a 265 bed capacity. Possibly yours will be listed as well? Just click on LTC History down the left-hand size of the page and you're off and running.>>
Fascinating information, as usual from this list. The Long Term Care History on the above web site is particularly interesting. Who'd have thought so much was being done way back in the 1800s!

<<Perhaps these places were the equivalent of our nursing homes or "assisted
living" facilities today.>>
That is exactly what they were. Some were for indigent folks only, others
accepted only men or women...all provided a wonderful service not only for
those who did not have family but for those whose families could not take
care of them.
Some went themselves...they wanted to be with friends, or folks from the old
country.
I worked in a geriatric facility...a home for the aged and infirm for
several years. One thanksgiving we had only a dozen residents who went
"home" or "out" for thanksgiving dinner...the majority of those who had a
choice opted to spend the holiday with their new family.
