Jack-
There IS a *good chance* that you can find the civil record of their
marriage. It will NOT clarify the relationship between the marrying couple and
their witnesses. On the other hand, it will provide you with other information.
I couldn't find my great-grandparents 1887 marriage record in church records
because the church no longer exsists. I searched Brooklyn civil marriage
records using my local FHC and ordering a microfilm from Salt Lake City. It
costs $5.50 and I was able to make photocopies for 25ยข each.
The film you would need to order from your FHC is :
Cert. # 684 - 1625; Feb - May 1888 FHL film # 1544414
When you find the record on the microfilm, be certain to look at the page
before and the page after. One of those pages will have additional information.
A civil record gives the following information:
Names of couple
Current addresses
Age
Number of Marriage
Place of Birth
Father and Mother's(maiden) Names
Date
Name of Marriage official(Priest, Pastor, Judge, etc)
Location of Marriage
Witnesses
Again, this will NOT clarify the relationship of the witness to the couple,
but it will provide other information.
Good Luck!
Susan

<<The information i require is James McMenamin born in Strabane,Ireland
married Briget Gallagher born in Donegal Ireland. they were married 6
april 1888 in Brooklyn,ny at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church
467 Court Street, byFr John Conner Patrick Monston and Mary Gallagher
witnesses. I received the Marriage cert from the church .From your
Ancestry sources, etc can you find the civil[Brooklyn} marr licence or any
other info. im trying to find out about the Mary Gallagher .was she a
sister or sisterinlaw?>>
<<The chances are slim to none that you will find a civil marriage license.
For most couples it was sufficient to be married in the church and a license
was not required.
You are very fortunate to have found the church and the records>>
