Most of the German records up to 1875 were copied by LDS. Germany has had a 100-year privacy rule so even if they went back today to catch up, they could only do up to 1905.

There are many other ways to track back. I was able to find both civilian and RC church records in Offenbach am Main. I was lucky in that on one of the German lists someone recognized my Gebert name and led me to family tree records and then to LDS films which unfortunately stopped in 1875.

There are form letters on the LDS and rootsweb sites that you can copy and plug in your family names. The bad part I found was needing German/Euro currency. It's been several years. Perhaps now they accept PayPal.

You are lucky in that you know where they came from. There is also now a Western Europe CD set available from familysearch.com and at every family history center. These FHC are great and can give you good guidance on German records.

Subject: tracking marriage records back to Germany?

Hi,

Has anyone had much experience tracking marriages back to the old country,
like Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany?

I am looking for a paper record of the marriage of Moses Frank to Sara
Monheimer in that area around 1910. Thanks for any leads. Both had become US
citizens (she by marriage) and settled in Atlanta, GA. This Moses Frank was the
"rich uncle" of Leo Frank, of Brooklyn.
