Barb, I don't konw what they DO mean, but my conjectures are as follows:
Could it possibly mean that James was in the United States Army and not
living at what actually was his Brooklyn home? These things did take some
time to compile, which means it could easily have been put together before
the war ended.. (now we will find out for sure it means something like
"under sea [during]August")
I wonder if "r do" doesn't mean "rear door?" or "right door?" Rear seems
more likely to me. If so, it could mean that she rented a room or
apartment at the back of the house, or even that she was a nurse at that
house and you had to knock at the servant's entrance for her.
Anyway, these are just guesses.
