Hi Fellow NYC Rooters,

I'm sorry that I haven't gotten back yet to all of you who asked for New
Amsterdam map lookups. There were many requests, and I'm a little backed up
over here!

Rest assured, though, that I will get back to everyone.

There were a number of hits on surnames. As a matter of fact, there may have
been more hits than I suspected, which is why I'm writing to you now. Expert
New Amsterdam researchers will already know about aliases, but less
experienced genealogists may not.

I found a book at the NY Genealogical & Biographical Society that I strongly
recommend. It's called CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT FAMILIES OF
NEW AMSTERDAM & NEW YORK by Edwin Purple, MD. Privately published 1881.

There's a section on "aliases" of Dutch surnames. These baptismal and other
names can vary greatly for the same individual and family. For instance,
PIKES is also PYCKES, PICQUES, and PIECES

According to the author, ECHERSON is also found in the NY Dutch Church
records as ECHONS, ECKENS, ECKES, ECKESON, EKKISSE, and ETKINS.

I knew there were variant spellings of surnames, but I had no idea that there
were so many!

So, if I wrote to you that the family you're searching wasn't on the map,
it's possible I steered you wrong. They might be listed with an alias.

By the way, some of you have asked about similar surnames. There might be
relatives right here on this list!

Yours in NYC research!

Leslie Corn
