ED means Enumeration Districts. There's a definition of every ED found
on one of the census films that define the area in for each ED. A census
taker was assigned his task by ED.

For example (I don't have one for 1870), but, for 1900;

ED #51 for Brooklyn (Kings County), contains all the houses in the area
bounded by Atlantic Ave, Henry St, Amity St, and the East River. (about
3 blocks long by 5 blocks deep). This ED is part of Ward 6. To make
matters more complicated, there is also a Supervisors District (SD) that
encompasses many EDs (SD #2 is Kings County)

In less populated areas, an ED was much larger in area; for example in
Sullivan County NY, SD #10, Cocherton was ED83, and Bethel (of Woodstock
Festival/Concert fame) was ED 80 & 81.

I may be incorrect in some of the terminology but you get the idea....If
you are looking to find people and know the address, then the EDs provide
the way to pin point your search.

BTW, Did your Costello come from Ireland? (Sounds like a song)..Mine did
and were in PA, NJ and NY...Any connections?
