I just recieved a reply from the New York City Archives that they were
unable to find a birth record for my father in either 1904 or 1905. My
question is if I were to check the birth index at my local Family
History center would the index list the names of the parents. This is
because when my Grandfather came from Ireland he spelled his name
McGrael and also McGrail instead of the way it is spelled today McGreal.
Thanks for any help;

John,
Next time you send for a birth record try also looking for FEMALE or MALE on
the record with the surname.
There are birth indexes for that period of time at the FHC as well as films
containing the copies of the records once you know the number for the
certificates.

To the group, apologies for my 18 mo. grandaughter sending the mail out before
I had it ready.
