I just today received my copy of the quarterly NY Genealogical &
Biographical Society Newsletter, Vol 9, No 1, Winter 1998. It contains
two articles of major interest to those researching 19th century
records in the Greater NY City area. The first in particular answers
a number of questions which have been asked on this list within the
past few months.
"Before the Five-Borough City: The Old Cities, Towns and Villages
That Came Together to Form 'Greater New York' " by Harry Macy Jr.,
Pages 3-6. (Describes the various annexations and incorporations which
took place from late 18th century through the consolidation of Greater
New York in 1898 and creation of Bronx County in 1914. Includes rough
maps.)
"Using the Records of the Emigrant Savings Bank" by Suzanne McVetty,
Page 7. (An overview and descriptions of what's available and what's
been lost.)
Single copies of this newsletter are available for $2.00 from:
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society
122 East 58th Street
New York, NY 10022-1939
(Thanks to Barbara Gardner for calling my attention to this newsletter,
otherwise it might have ended up on my heap labeled "To Be Read
Manyana".)
Regards,
Charles Sullivan
