Don't know specifically what you're interested in, but you might want to check
the Roll of Attorneys Admitted to the Bar in NY County at the NY County
Clerk's Office/ Hall of Records, 31 Chambers St., 7 Fl, NY, NY 10007.
There are two interesting sets of libers. One shows attorneys' signatures. I'm
not positive of the exact years, but they may predate the years you want. The
other is a list of dates when attorneys were admitted to the NY Bar. The years
are 1754-1847 and 1847-1895. If you find your person in the index (organized
by date and then by first letter of the surname), you can then look for the
attorney's records. The records are fascinating-- can include recommendations
from law professors, name of law school, and the typical info of name,
address, age. Well worth checking, if you have NYC lawyers in the family.
There are also some interesting books. This is one of my favorites:
REVIEW OF THE ASSOCIATION OF THE BAR OF THE CITY OF NY, TOGETHER WITH
PORTRAITS AND AUTOGRAPHS OF OFFICERS AND MEMBERS BRROUGHT DOWN TO THE YEAR
1900, by Frank Thompson, 1900.
Among the best places for books about attorneys in NYC are the NYG&BS, the
NYHS, the NYPL, and the library at 31 Chambers St, 1st Fl. I don't know what
LDS has.
Best,
Leslie
