<< This is my first day on the list and I am really impressed so far. I
wanted to jump in quick and ask if anyone is researching the
MCSHEA/MCSHAY family. My great-grandfather was Joseph William McShea,
born 14 April, 1899. His parents (William McShea and Helen Gaedke)
lived at 239 (?) E. 93rd St. Helen's parents came to the US from
Meklenburg, Germany and William's parents came over from Westmeath,
Ireland.
I have a few vital records/census records and pictures of the family,
but would love to learn more! Where do I start?
THANKS!

Sounds like you've already made a great start.... I'm assuming you have the
1900 federal census record ?? It should give you year of immigration and if
naturalized. Follow those trails, looking for the arrival document and the
citizenship documents if naturalized.
Be sure you obtain all vital records...write for them....birth, marriage,
death. They will contain pieces to your puzzle.
Be sure to find all US records before going overseas.
Mecklenburg Germany...it is a state in Germany and you will need the town or
village to find records for your ancestors. I think there is a list server
for Mecklenburg, check it on Cyndi's List. http://www.cyndislist.com/
The records are kept at the parish level.
Once you know the name of the town in Mecklenburg you can locate the parish
with a Gazetteer.
There is a Gazetteer for the area of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Look in the
Latter-day Saints Family History Library for the Microfilm # 496473 under Item
8 or on Fiche #6000834 (2)
The Address for the Mecklenburgs Lutheran Church
Evangelisch-Lutherische Landeskirche Mecklenburgs
Landesbischof, Christoph Stier
Oberkirchenrat
Munzstrasse 8
19055 Schwerin
Germany
you must write in German. There are form letters available.
As for Ireland...here again you need the name of the town.
There is a list of Irish immigrants arriving to the port of New York Indexed
for 1846-1851 "The Famine Immigrants" check your library or the Family History
Center Library of the Latter-day Saints. There is also a Irish Passenger List
for 1847-1871 which lists passengers sailing from Londonderry to America on
ships of the J&J Cooke Line and the McCorkell Line...also available at the FHC
New York Irish History web site found at
http://www.irishnyhistory.com/
The Shamrock list Service is a new list for Irish researching. Subscribe by
sending email to
put subscribe in the subject area. Type just the word Subscribe in the body
of the message.
Go to GenTreeGenealogy at http://www.gentreegenealogy.com/irel.htm for more
details.
Hope this helps some,
