Subject: [NYC] 1920's burial

Dear Listers,
My husband and I are trying to track down his paternal g-grandparents,
German immigrants who lived in the Brooklyn/Queens region for most if
not all of their time in this country. A few months ago we called all
the non-Jewish, non-Catholic cemeteries in Brooklyn and Queens in an
attempt to find their graves, to no avail. (Everyone was quite friendly
except for the folks at Cypress Hills Cemetery; they did, however,
respond to a written request.) Today we received his g-grandmother's
death certificate from NY City.
According to the death certificate, Katherine Hartten died 2 March 1920
and was buried 5 March 1920 in Evergreen Cemetery, 8012 Jamaica Ave.,
Woodhaven, NY. The undertaker was J.P. Eldridge.
The New York City phone directories show an Evergreen Cemetery at
1629 Bushwick Ave. in Brooklyn. The map put out by AAA shows a
"Cemetery of the Evergreens" just north of Cypress Hills Cemetery;
Cypress Hills Cemetery is on Jamaica Ave (mailing address 833 Jamaica
Ave., Brooklyn).
As I said, within the last 2 months both Evergreen Cemetery and
Cypress Hills Cemetery have denied "having" Kate Hartten. Does anyone
know what happened to the Evergreen Cemetery which was on Jamaica Avenue
in the 1920's? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do now?
Cheers,
Leslie
