I need help on Richard VARICK IN EARLY NYC (NOT Col Richard VARICK, mayor of
NYC in late 1790s)
I have searched the early NYC directories and he is always at a different
address-I checked the NYC map and these addresses are all in the same area
In 1810 he is listed as a Boatman and the rest of the time as a Mariner
Following are the dates and addresses:
1810 84 James
1812/1310 Mott
181425 James
1814/1531 Lombardy
1816/17116 Elizabeth
181916 Pike
182049 Forsyth
1821Grand n Chrystie
then
1834/35Marjory, widow of Richard, 151 Pine
The death certificate of his son John James states his father is Richard and
his mother Margaret Foster.
That is ALL I know about Richard....
Another mystery - living at the same address at one time and most of the time
in close proximity was Phineas Lockwood.
1850 Census of NYC, District 3, Ward 9, has a Margaret Varick, 66 with three
adult children, including a Phineas. John James is in NYC 1850 census in the
8th Ward.
Any comments you may have concerning this puzzle will be gratefully received.
I have studied this for 20 years and sometimes it seems I am so close......and
then....
