Philip:
Yes, guardianship records are kept in Surrogate
Court. And try to get to County Office Building and
search Civil & Criminal case indexes for your
surnames. In a Civil case packet, I found reference
to an adoption proceeding where my ancestor
was first appointed guardian, then adopted an
orphaned neice. The file gave info on death of
her parents, location of orphanage (out of state),
birth name of child, and new name given by my
ancestor. Another example on the value of these
records...a living relative told me story of an
ancestor who who was a rapist (hush, hush, and
nothing more). I found the Criminal case where he
was found innocent and a Civil case where he sued
accusor.

Subject: [NYC] Age of majority in 1849 NYC

Hello again to all:
In a will of 1849 by Henry WORRALL of NYC is a statement noting there
were minor children of Mr. Worrall that were to have guardians
appointed, even tho Mr. Worrall's wife Dorothy was still living.

Our family records show no children under age 21.

Does anyone know the legal age of majority in 1849 NYC?
Also, would guardianship records be in Surrogate's Court?
Kind regards,
Philip Brown
