Below is the end of the index of NY Times items in my possession for
1924-1929. Please include the date of the newspaper if you request a look-up.

And for fun, I'm having a contest! In compiling my master list of names,
all 2906 of them so far, I noticed there were some surnames that appeared
more than other, naturally. The most frequently occuring surname is SMITH
(33 listed). My contest is this - see if you can name the second most
frequently occuring surname. I am grouping together names such as CLARK
and CLARKE, MURPHY and MURPHEY, ANDERSEN and ANDERSON and DOUGLAS and
DOUGLASS. But, some names are difficult to determine whether they should
be counted together, such as McGOWN, McGOWAN and MAGOWAN (fortunatly, that
name is not a contender). Luckily for me, the winner was clear cut, no
funky spellings to mess up the contest. **These are names from the
1873-1929 NY Times death notices for which I have previously posted the
indexes**

I do exclude one (?) surname that could have won if they are all counted
together, and that is COHEN (9), COHN (5) and KOHN (1). I don't know if
these should be counted as one surname, so I'm excluding them. I am also
not counting the names JOHNSON, JOHNSTON and JOHNSTONE as one surname (that
wouldn't have been clear-cut anyway, like the winning answer is).

The first five people who answer correctly wins a free look-up from the NY
Times (it's all I have to offer, unless someone knows of some other
non-monetary prize I have to give). Please respond by the end of Saturday
- answer to be posted Sunday.
