Subject: [NYC] Location of Church?

It is amazing how you can get different information..... From family lore I had my GG Grandparents marrying in Trinity Church (Episcopalian?) in lower Manhattan.... I now have a copy of a marriage Certificate for them from "Church of St. Joseph"(Catholic?) in New York City dated in 1859. The certificate states that they were married in 1837.

Question:

1. I think the church was in lower Manhattan.. Is it still in existence??

2. What reasons could someone need a certificate 22 years later? The Groom died in 1849 and the bride died in 1861.

Anyone's insight would be welcomed....

TIA
Pat
