In the 1850s No. 160 Tenth was at the corner of Avenue A. Today that
area has been renumbered so that same parcel is No. 500 (more or less)

There was a St. Marks German Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sixth Street
between First and Second Avenues that was attended by people who lived
at the above location. That building was sold to a synagogue circa
1940. The St. Mark's congregation merged with Zion Lutheran
Church on E. 84th Street in Manhattan. It is now called Zion-St.
Mark's. It is listed in the phone book. The church has all the old
church books back to the 1850s and will do research by correspondence
for a donation.

There are other German churches in the area including Presbyterian,
Methodist and Catholic. The WPA series (one for each denomination in
NYC) outlines the history of each church and tells what records were
available circa 1940. It is available in many libraries and Family
History Centers.
