On 11/03/2000 (10:28:29 AM EST), ????? () asks,

"Arthur (Adolph) Klaffky died in Calverton, Long Island, May 31,1927, while
on a camping trip with his children. He lived in Ozone Park. I have looked
in the 1927, all boroughs, microfilm at the FHC and he wasn't there. I
couldn't find any other place to look. Can someone steer me as to how to
find this--what to look for-at the FHC or elsewhere?"

Calverton is a a hamlet (unincorporated area) partly in the Town of
Brookhaven and partly in the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County. There are 4
villages and 15 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Huntington. There are 8
villages and 36 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Brookhaven and there are
no villages and 7 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Riverhead (Riverhead
is the only town in either Suffolk or Nassau County without any villages
within its borders.)

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of
Calverton in the Towns of Brookhaven and Riverhead is bordered on the north
by the Hamlet of Wading River and the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow, Town of
Riverhead; on the east by the Hamlet of Riverhead, Town of Riverhead and the
Hamlet of Riverside, Town of Southampton; on the south by the Hamlet of
Eastport, Town of Brookhaven; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Manorville,
Town of Brookhaven.

And, like almost every community in either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, the
hamlet and the postal zone that use the same name, have different borders.
Thus, places with a "Calverton, NY" mailing address may not be in Calverton
and places in Calverton may not have a "Calverton, NY" mailing address.

For those who have their copy of the 1998 or 1999 LI Population Survey or
have already downloaded the report from the Suffolk County Cooperative
Library web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access
and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Calverton in the Towns of
Brookhaven and Riverhead, Suffolk County on pages 14, 24 & 26 (map) and 25 &
27 (population estimate).

The collection of Vital Records in New York State begin in 1881, and are
required to be kept by the city or town, as the case may be, in which the
event (birth, death, marriage) occurred and by the state (Albany).

Some of the larger villages do maintain these records, but not all villages
do as they may voluntarily waive their right to do so and make it a
responsibility of the town(s) in which the village is (are) in. If the place
where the event occurred is in a village, the Town Clerk will tell you if the
village or the town maintains the record.

Currently, there are 10 towns in Suffolk County: Huntington, Babylon,
Smithtown, Islip, Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, Shelter
Island and East Hampton

There are 2 cities (Glen Cove and Long Beach) and 3 towns (Hempstead, North
Hempstead and Oyster Bay) in Nassau County.

In this regard, please remember that it is very important to know in which
city or town (or village) the event took place and the city or town (or
village) could be different from the city or town (or village) where the
individual may have resided.

As I wrote, Calverton is a hamlet in the Towns of Brookaven and Riverhead,
Suffolk County.

I'm including after my name the contact information for the Town Clerk of the
Town of Brookhaven and the Town of Riverhead:

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Walter Greenspan
