Subject: [NYC] Could 'uncle' on passenger list be employer in US?

Hi,
My grandfather Schmidt and his two brothers came to the US from Kiel
Germany. I accessed the passenger lists for my great uncles through the
Ellis Island site. The first man to come over (Max Schmidt of Kiel Germany)
listed his Uncle Alex Johnson of 289 Lewis Ave, Brooklyn, as the relative in
the US he would join. This is in 1923.

I've never heard of Alex, and he doesn't appear on other documents for
the great uncles or my grandfather so far (but I have Max's naturalization
records on order from NARA--have his brothers' already). I suspect he was
Max's future employer or a recruiter of some kind. I *think* I saw
something on this list or somewhere else (maybe the Ellis Island museum)
about how it was not legal to recruit people to leave their homelands to
come here for a job, so maybe this is how it was done, by calling the
recruiter an uncle or othe relative. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks, Laura (Pittsburgh)
