You can find population totals by census by state in almost any U.S.
almanac. A good library will have population references for more
detailed information. The information may also be available on line at
the NARA site.
I have _Abstract of the Fourteenth Census of the United States, 1920_,
that I picked up years ago at a used book sale. Here's the data on
native American Indian population:
1920 244,437
1910 265,683
1900 237,196
1890 248,253
1880 66,407
1870 25,731
1860 44,021
Notes:
Indians in the Indian Territory and on reservations were not enumerated
before 1890.
A special enumeration in 1890 found 189,447 Indians, 117,368 whites,
18,636 Negroes, and 13 Chinese in Indian Territory or on reservations.
My note:
Native American Indians were not made citizens of the United States with
all the rights and obligations appertaining thereto until 1924.
An estimate by the Bureau of Indian Affairs gave 320,000 as the number
of Indians living on reservations in 1933.
