Brooklyn Roots listowner Nancy Lutz has an interesting article about the Williamsburgh Bridge on her website at http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/williamsburg/.

Before the Williamsburg Bridge was built I assume there were ferries between the lower East Side of Manhattan and Brooklyn. I'm trying to understand how my Russian/Polish ancestors who were in NYC in 1893 might have turned up in Greenpoint in 1898. They were back on the lower East side by 1910.
Does anybody know if making the crossing was a fairly common thing and was it relatively easy?
