ANOTHER FATAL ACCIDENT;
On Friday, week as four men in a boat with 5 or 6 barrels of salt were making the Cattaraugus Creek, the boat stuck on a bar near the mouth, there being a heavy swell, she instantly capsized and 3 of the men were drowned the other one fortunately made his escape. The salt was also lost. 2 of the bodies have been found. The names of the men drowned are William INGRAHAM, formerly a volunteer under Colonel CHAPIN, (Was a soldier of the Revolution and also served in the War of 1812 )and ________PRATT, Esq. The names of the other persons unknown, they were all from the town of Hanover, Chautauqua CO NY
In the December 14, 1813 issue there appeared the following paragraph; “On the 12th ult a boat was making the mouth of the Cattaraugus Creek, having 4 men on board, with barrels of salt, she struck on a bar and capsized when Daniel PRATT ESQ. And Charles F COLLINS of Pomfret and William INGRAHAM of Hanover were drowned. The remaining person, Edward MALLET made his escape. The bodies of Ingraham and Collins have been found, Daniel. PRATT (ca 1760-1813) was from Worcester Co MA, Collins from Vermont, Esq. Pratt has left a widow (Mary “Polly” DYE Pratt) and 7 children to lament his loss” Daniel and Polly are buried at Sheridan Center Cemetery,
William Ingraham was the brother of Amos Ingraham also a Rev War Soldier both buried in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery Hanover Center, the sons of Ephraim INGRAHAM Mother: Margaret HERRICK
