At least in Chautauqua County, there is no record of the estate of a lot of people who died without a will, even if they owned property.
Most likely, no one ever put up a stone for your ancestor who died in 1893. I have an ancestor buried in Quincy Cemetery who never had a stone. His mother-in-law had a stone that was standing as of 1965, but has since disappeared. However, in 1893, they tended to use longer lasting stone, like granite, rather than the marble they used earlier.
