Just to let the above lists know: there really are people working on the
Lockwood lines!
Just kidding!
Sometimes it seems forever before you get a break on these cold trails, but I
think I can safely report a partial one. This explanation may be a little
wordy, but it shows you how you have to search collateral lines to find what
you want.
I have been looking for a John Lockwood who was supposed to be the father of
Cornelius Lockwood(born in Columbia Co., NY, in 1806 ) for about 20 years.
Family legend suggested he was from Walton, Delaware Co.,NY, but I couldn't
find a match until I started researching another lead through the Sines family
of Walton. This search was based on a note written many years ago that my
ggreat-grandfather, Lewis Locoweed (1853-1939), corresponded with a Mary Jane
Sines of Walton. So, actually in desperation, I looked up Sines in a USA
directory CD to see if there were any Sines living in Walton today. After 3
phone calls, I found a relative of Mary Jane Sines. She told me that Mary
Jane's mother was a Catherine LOCKWOOD who had married Orrin Fish and their
daughter, Mary Jane, married Wilson SINES,but she didn't know anything about
the LOCKWOOD family. Since there were no John Lockwoods listed in the early
1800s censuses for Walton, I started looking in neighboring communities. In
Delhi, I found a John who was shown on all the censuses from 1810-1850
(Actually , ten years ago, I found this and discarded the idea of this being
our John because Cornelius was born in Columbia Co.) But ,now with a fresh
perspective, looking at the 1850 census, I saw him, his wife Jane , their
sons, Sanders, 40, and John Jr. ,37. Then, I remembered a handwritten note I
had seen in the margin of an old history of Oneida Co referrring to this John
of Lockwood of Walton. . All it said was "Jennie Sanders- wife?. Now I
wondered if the Jennie could be Jane and their son, Sanders, was named after
her maiden name. Now I knew that this John Lockwood died in 1853 from obits I
had copied from the Delhi Gazette. So I looked for Jane in 1860 Delhi census,
but instead found a Sanders listed in Hamden for that year. Going to that
census, I found Sanders living with his brother, John, Jr. (both still
bachelors!) and guess who I found 2 doors down on the census? Catherine Fish
who was the mother of Mary Jane Sines. To me, this meant that the brothers
after the death of both their father and mother moved closer to their sister.
Is that taking too much for granted? Well, based on this asuumption, I went
back and plotted the age of Catherine in each of the earlier censuses assuming
her father was John and they matched perfectly. Then I found a marriage for
her and Orrin Fish that stated they were both from Delhi. Now I felt good
about Catherine. But I still had to tie Cornelius to this family. There were
two older males born around between 1801 and 1809 which I figured out from the
1810 census . Cornelius was born in 1806 so that fit. However, Cornelius was
born in Columbia Co, lived in Rensselaer until 1859 when he moved to Oneida
Co where he died in 1890. This is where I am right now. One hope is to obtain
the 1855 NY State census for Delaware Co ( this is the 1st census that tells
the county they were born in) and see if Henry LOCKWOOD from Tompkins was
born there. According to the 1850 census,he was born in 1805 . He could be the
other older brother. If he ties to Columbia County, then I would feel that it
is possible that Cornelius was part of this family too. There is a lot of
other circumstantial evidence involved here that I can't go into for reasons
of time and space, but I feel I am on the right trail now and it is hotter
than it has ever been which is a nice feeling!
Hope this explanation will help some of you through your rough spots and maybe
we can locate the other children involved with this John Lockwood! (I am
missing an older daughter, as well, who was born between 1801 and 1804.
The family looks like this : John, born 1777 in NY,died 1853
Jane, born 1775 (Sanders, possible last
name)
daughter, b. 1801-1804
son,b. 1801-1809
Cornelius, b. 1806, d. 1890
Sanders, b. 1810
John, Jr. b. 1813
Catherine b. 1816, married Orrin
Fish in 1838
Hope to hear from some other Lockwoods in Delaware Co, Rens.Co.or Columbia,Co.
NY!!
Nancy
