Margaret,

I suspect you are referring to the Dutch line of Groats (DeGroot,DeGroat,
etc.), though
at the early date of 1848 I don't recall seeing that line using the
G-R-O-A-T spelling.
If you are referring to the Palatine Groat (Kradt, Gradt, Grad, Graat, etc.)
line you may
