Follow-up to my previous message, which was really sent before I
completed it!

From the February 23, 1870 Delaware Gazette:

"Liberal - It is said that Rev. Mr. Lee, of Brushland, at a
donation party at his house last week, received the very liberal sum of
$1,900. His parishioners must be not only wealthy but liberal, and hold
their pastor in high estimation.
"The friends of Rev. Mr. Kennedy made him a donation on Monday
afternoon and evening. At the time our informant left, nearly $1,400
had been handed in, and a determination expressed to make the amount not
less than $1,500. This is also a generous sum indeed, as we understand
the congregation is by no means large."

The Reverends involved are James B. Lee, who was pastor for more than 30
years of the United Presbyterian Church in Bovina (he left in 1888 and
when he later retired he came back to Bovina, dying in 1914) and Joshua
Kennedy, who came to Bovina as pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian (also
known as Covenanter) in 1865 and served until 1885, retiring to
Pennsylvania where he died in 1891. The United Presbyterian
congregation was significantly larger than that of the Reformed
Presbyterians. The UP had close to 300 members, while the RP had less
than 100.
