Lewis,

There are "lost" souls in most cemeteries, if you go in to the older
sections with a metal rod and poke below the soil, usually you will find
stones laying under maybe 6 inches of soil.when the headstones fell over and
were left, years of leaves pile up and bury the stones, others are hauled off
to be used for doorsteps, or discarded by uncaring cemetery workers. My
experiences have been mostly in Westchester & Putnam Cemeteries, but I bet it
is the same way everywhere. I have ancestors under blacktopped parking lots,
too. The cemetery at Mekeel's Corners was once considered Dutchess County,
now Putnam County, many of my ancestors are in it, it is deplorable
condition, few of the headstones are standing and there is no legal acess to
it, only over private land. I sure wish I knew what could be done about it
and other forgotten cemeteries, but everything costs money.
