Surname: Smith or Smyth or Smythe and Monk

My grandfather, Charles MONK , on an insurence application, said he was
born on 1 Apr 1857 in Matteawan, Dutchess Cty.,NY. His mother was Julia
Smythe or Smith or Smyth. I have her name spelled all three ways on Baptismal
certificates of their childern. His father was Charles. Julia was Catholic
and was born in Ireland (maybe Cty. Cavan). Charles was born in Longdon,
Stafford, England and was Church of England. Julia's father was James and
her mother, Julia. I do not think Charles was Baptised in a Catholic church.
They were from Brooklyn, NY. I feel that she must have had a tie to Dutchess
Cty. aand whent there for the birth of her first two childern. Any help?
