Dear KarenL,
It has been far too long since I have spent any time in Dutchess County, so
my memory of the available record sources is dim. That said, is there not a
collection of church records in the historical room at the Poughkeepsie
Library? Given that there are big spaces between the birthdates of the three
males you cite, I would search for further entries of children of William and
Elisabeth (Organ) Knapp. You might find that there is further similarity in
family given names beyond brother George H. and possible son George Bertram.
I also note that the earliest son shown, b. in 1857 was named Willie R.,
which could have its origin in the putative father, William.
Also, I almost hate to ask if you have tried the 1860, 1870 and 1880
censuses, looking for these same kind of similarities in naming patterns?
I don't remember where the marriage records are kept -- I'm not sure I ever
had to look one up in these counties. I do know that marriage records in New
York are often missing or non-existent in many other places were I have
searched, but if there are any available through church sources, etc., you
might check for a marriage of James I to Sarah Amanda Whoever.
Good Luck
