My ggg gf was Alexander Thompson b. ca 1797 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co. NY He joined the U.S. Navy in 1815 or before, and his records say that he was a resident of Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co. NY. He remained with them until 1826 when he resigned his commission and joined the Mexican Navy. He stayed with the Mex. Navy until 1829 when he came to TX and joined Austin's colonists. I believe he was the son of Alexander Thompson b. ca 1755 and died in Rhinebeck in Jan. 1813. My Alex led quite an exciting life, but I have no absolute concrete proof that he was the son of Alex who died in 1813. (I'm looking for something in Alex Sr's estate records that will mention son Alex being "at sea", in the military, etc.)
The scenario is just about perfect. Mother died in 1806. Father remarried and then died. Alex was under age. Father who was a land surveyor willed Alex his compass, land surveying equipment, etc. Alex joined the Navy. My Alex later made nautical charts for the Mexican govt. and was apppointed cheif cartographer for the Rep. of TX in 1837. Unfortunately, he died in 1839 - prob. during a yellow fever epidemic here in TX.
There was a Gideon Thompson also here in early TX. I am thinking he came from Giles Co. TN, but don't quote me on that one. But he was in So. TX in the mid 1800's - settled around what is now Frio/Uvalde counties. Never did tie him to my Alex tho - but my Alex came in alone and by sea.
There was also a Henry Livingston Thompson who was in the TX Navy. I don't know where he came from but he died here in 1837. I thought he might be related to Smith Thompson and Sarah Livingston of Dutchess Co., but have been told that he was not their son. Could have come from anywhere, but I've sort of felt that he was with the USN, Mexicans and then came to TX Navy with Commodor David Porter, Charles Hawkins, a man named Harris and others after leaving the USN.
When these guys were in the USN, they were chasing slave ships and pirates in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, etc. One of the officers was detained on the island of Puerto Rico, and Commodore David Porter send an armed force onto the island demanding an apology. The P.R's complained to the U.S. Govt and Porter and his men were called back to Washington D.C. and court martialed. That's when they resigned from the USN and joined the Mexican Navy.
Please write again. I'm sure that my Alex had other relatives in Dutchess Co. and I'd like to find them.
Joanne
