Verdine Elsworth petitioned for his land rights after the French & Indian
War, and in
1764 he was among the patentees of the Cockcroft Patent, Hartford,
Washington Co., NY. - he received 3000 acres. I doubt that he ever settled
on the land, however.

border. We wondered for the longest time why he would leave family and
friends and go to upper NY. Then, we learned some Rev. War Patriots, in the
place of a pension, took land. That's why a lot of soldiers who actually
fought in the Rev. War and the war of 1812 are not listed in pension
records. They took land instead. My direct ancestor had it very hard but his
children and grandchildren were very lucky he did what he did. Money
spends...but land is there forever!
