Have you ever seen these records ANYWHERE??? Please tell me where!!!!
Looking for the publications which have lists of rent rolls from information
before the Revolution for (then) Dutchess (now) Putnam Co. It contained
lists of farms in each of the Great Lots. They derived from the claims made
by the Philipse children in London who owned the Philipse Patent (Putnam
Co.) and recorded in the official British Audit Office Records there.
(1) The first publication of the lease lists was transcribed by NYC Public
Library in 1898. I have a copy of one page of this transcript sent by the
WCHS. The whole transcription is about a dozen pages.
(2) "American Loyalist Claims" abstracted from the Public Record Office,
Audit Office series 13, bundles 1-35 & 37
by Peter Wilson Coldham. Indexed. 1980. 615 pp. Hardbound. @ $21.50
Published by National Genealogical Society of Arlington VA . Don't know if
this is the same information. LDS has the book on microfilm and as a book.
(3) The original Bristish Audit Office Papers are also available. They were
put on reels (assume microfilm) and series 1 is $60/reel and series 2 is
$7,250. Series 1 includes transcripts of material from the British Public
Record Office class A012, Exchequer and Audit Department, 1776-1831 (30
reels). Series 2 contains transcripts from A013 (assume Audit Office series
# 13).
Contacted NYC Public but they have no information about their own NYC Public
Library Transcription.
There is a detailed discussion of the British Audit Office Papers in "The
Loyalist Americans" edited by Robert A. East and Jacob Judd, editors, ("The
Loyalist Americans: A Focus on Greater New York") published in Tarrytown by
Sleepy Hollow Restorations, (1975). This book is undoubtedly available at
your public library. Well worth reading for background. But check the index
as well.
It gives which series is correct in the index.
Suspect that the Library at Sleepy Hollow has copies of the original papers
on film.
Assume Westchester County Historical has the NYPL series. I had request
Putnam loyalist papers mentioning "Dingee" so I got the 1 sheet that I have
but the WCHS unwilling to provide more ("Westchester County NOT involved").
Would like to see this information on the Putnam and Westchester sites.
Would help early research emensely.
Thanks
Janet Newman
