I remember reading an old Dutchess County Historical society article where someone took one of the early census's and mapped out where people might have lived.
The person came up with a potential listing of all of the names by using the original order of names in the census, mapped out where the roads were, mapped out homes of known people and assumed that the census person went in order along the roads.
You may want to do something similar, find the original order of the census names, and see if there are any well known names close to his that you could zero in on his house.
