Hi Grant,
I hear your frustration and empathize, however, I'm afraid that I only
learned of my connection to Dutchess, now Putnam, county, a few days ago and
am still in search of answers. The info opened up a whole new, unexplored
branch of my family. With taxes and Easter out-of-town, it may be a bit
before I can pursue full tilt. I also need to find the repository of old
marriage records for Dutchess, now Putnam.

I can tell you what I plan on doing; not knowing what you've already tried,
bear with me if I'm giving you old and failed advice.

First, I have contacted the public library in the town of the marriage in
hopes that they have marriage records for the date that I need, I also asked
if they have a volunteer who does look-ups for nominal fees, and if they
don't have the records, to please tell me who would. In theory, a public
library should be able to answer that. A historical society will also often
have those resources, I just haven't identified one for Putnam.

The next thing that I would do, if you haven't and strike out with the
marriage record, is to look-up the 1800 and 1790 census records for all
Travises in Carmel. That way you can see if there are any children that fit
Amasa's age range. Get yourself a map of Putnam county and literally place
the Travises with dots and just begin exploring the closest. I see that
there no Travises in 1800 in Putnam but were a boodle in Westchester. I'd do
some nosing around for families in Westchester that are closest to Carmel.
One thing that I have learned, is that when the name is old and common, we
end up having to place and explore a lot of the others so as to find ours.
It was tradition to marry in the bride's town, so Amasa may well have lived
a few miles over the border in Westchester. If Carmel is close to any other
county border, he may have been from yet another.

Have you looked for a birth record for Amasa in Westchester?

I would also say to look in Fairfield, CT, as people seemed to hop back and
forth across the border, however, I see no Travises in 1800 in CT.

I also would go to the tree files in Rootweb and do age range searches to
find other children that might turn out to be your Amasa's sibs. Someone
else's research might give you a name that looks familiar, etc. Pay careful
attention to what Amasa named his children. Parent names and family names
are often there. All of this gives you nothing definitive but does provide
some direction on where to look. You will then have to check war records and
wills and other primary documentation to try to clinch your hunches.

Lastly, I guess the thing that I would say is to remember that these folks
seemed to travel in "packs". For good reason. The environs were harsh and
life hard. So always look at the neighbors of your couple for possible names
that connect. I find that for most moves, there was a sib or in-law or war
buddy or group of friends that accompanied.

I will keep you posted on what I find..
Good luck!
Patricia
