Ruth,
Dutchess County Surrogate's Court has recorded wills from May 1787 to the
present. In addition to a will index, there is a consolidated estate index
which indexes in one place the wills and all the other probate documents
related to settling an estate - so it includes both testate and intestate
estates. The LDS Family History Library has microfilm copies of will books
and their indexes, the consolidated index, and the probate packets of all
the other legal documents and loose papers associated with probate, so you
could order film at an FHC.
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society published abstracts of
Dutchess County wills recorded in the first will books, Will Book (Liber) A
and AA in their quarterly Record, Volume 61 & 62 (1930-1931). The Dutchess
County Genealogical Society abstracted wills, beginning with Will Book B
and ending with Will Book K in their quarterly publication The Dutchess.
A general reference published recently is Gordon Remington's New York State
Probate Records. A Genealogist's Guide to Testate and Intestate
Records (NEHGS, 2002).
A specific reference is Arthur Kelly's Dutchess County, NY Probate Records
1787-1865 (Rhinebeck, NY: Kinship, 1997) which acts as an index to the
names of testators, intestates and administrators (it is not abstracts of
the actual records).
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has an excellent article
about New York probate records before 1787 online at
<http://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/>. From the Main Menu down the left
of the Home page, click on "Research Aids", then "New York State Research"
for a list of available articles including the one on early probate
records. Ancestry.com has abstracts of early New York state wills that
includes some wills of Dutchess residents from before 1787.
Hope this helps,
Linda
