Subject: [NYDUTCHE] Three Cheers - Historical Records

On the Editorial Page of todays Poughkeepsie Journal in their feature called
"Three Cheers" appeared the following:

[Believe me the word archives used here in the first sentence was used very
loosely - this county does not have an "archives" or what I prefer to term
an "archival storage facility geared to research".]

Three cheers

To Dutchess leaders for preserving historical documents that were falling
apart in the county archives.

Pages of a book of land records had been sewn together in one bound book but
were becoming frayed with wear. They are now in individual protective
sleeves, thanks to a $1,200 allocation in the 2005 county budget.

Proposed by County Executive William Steinhaus and approved by legislators,
this preservation effort will aid the documents under the care of County
Clerk Colette Lafuente. The hand-written records cover transactions from
1894 through 1897 and are frequently used by researchers.

Keeping these documents preserved for future use will aid those wanting to
learn about our past.
-------------------------------
The following is my Letter to the Editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal
submitted today!

County Clerk LaFuente indeed deserves "Three Cheers" for advocating for and
insuring the preservation of records under her care. I look forward to the
day when I read of the same for Records Management Officer Donald Miller for
records under his care at the Records Center - many of which have never been
microfilmed (or the microfilm is deteriorating) and predate those held by
the County Clerk. Read the 2002 Historic Records Needs Assessment

Perhaps one day there will also be "Three Cheers" for our County Executive
and Legislature, as well as our County Historian when this County has a
centralized archival research facility comparable to our neighboring
counties dedicated to the special care our historical records so desperately
need and deserve.

Our newly appointed County Historian can and MUST play an important roll in
advocating for this once he realizes that under the guidelines established
by the New York State Department of Education and Dutchess County Local Law
No. 3 of 1986 promoting same is part of his charge:

"Each local government historian shall promote the establishment and
improvement of programs for the management and preservation of local
government records with enduring value for historical or other research;
encourage the collection and preservation of non-governmental historical
records by libraries, historical societies, and other repositories; and
carry out and actively encourage research in such records in order to add to
the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the community's history. "
