Subject: Brundage KNAPP (1773-1866)
Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 23:45:01 EDT
According to his obituary, Brundage Knapp
was born in Putnam County, New York, and
died at age 93 in 1866 in Huron County, Ohio.
This would mean he was born about 1773, before Putnam County was formed from
Dutchess County in 1812.
The book Additions to the Supplement of the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy gives
the parents of Brundage Knapp as Jacob and Mary (Edwards) Knapp, but several
of us who descend from the Brundage Knapp who moved to Huron County, Ohio,
believe this entry combines data on two men with this name. We have not found
parents for "our" Brundage Knapp.
We have identified five different men named Brundage Knapp.
"Too old" Brundage Knapp was born before 1765. He was living in Westchester
County, New York, in 1810.
"Our" Brundage Knapp was born about 1773. He was living in Somers,
Westchester County, New York, in 1820, in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio, in
1830, in Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio, in 1850, and in Fairfield
Township, Huron County, Ohio, in 1860. We have not yet found him in the 1840 census.
"Too young New York" Brundage Knapp was born between 1795 and 1804. He was
living in North Salem, Westchester County, New York in 1820 and 1830. He married
Lavina. In 1850 and 1860 he was living in Westchester County, New York.
"Too young Ohio" Brundage Knapp was born between 1811 and 1820. In 1840 he
was living in Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio. He was probably too old to
be a private in the Civil War.
"Civil War" Brundage Knapp was born about 1840 in Ohio. In 1850 he was
living with Jane Knapp age 53 in Lyme Township, Huron County, Ohio, in the
household of Stephen Sawyer. There are two entries in the 1860 census of Hartland
Township, Huron County, Ohio, both of which may be for him. This is probably the
Brundage Knapp whose death in Frederick City, Maryland, in 1862 of typhoid
fever while serving in the Civil War is reported in the 26 August 1862 Norwalk
[Ohio] Reflector newspaper.
