According to the USGS Geographic Names Information System, Mattewan is a variant name for the town now known as Beacon, NY. Beacon is on the western edge of Dutchess County, while Pawling is, and always was, on the eastern edge of Dutchess County, about 25 mile east, and a bit north, of Mattewan/Beacon.
