Hi Ginny, This is now getting very interesting. From the description and my memory (latter not to be trusted) it sounds like my paternal grandparents farm. They bought it in 1930s. The meeting of the creeks, i.e. the "Salt Point" was on their land. We used to play back there on Thanksgiving when all the grandchildren were together. I went down the road in the spring when I did no Salt Point nostalgia tour, and it is my recollection that the bridge over the creek was right past their house. As you may recall, I have Husted ancestors on my maternal side. My maternal grandparents lived on Allen Road--another name you mention. I am going to have to read this more carefully, but after the first time through had to reply. I will also call my mother and see if she remembers anything about this tomb. We lived with my paternal grandparents for awhile after the war was over until my parents found a place of their own. Unfortunately my father and all his siblings are now deceased. First Parcel - Beginning at the Southeast abutment of the bridge across the Wappinges Creek on the road leading from Hibernia to Salt Point. . . . . 98 Acres. Second Parcel - Beginng at the northwest corner of said piece of land at a stump standing on the west bank of the Wappingers creek . . . . 11 Acres "EXCEPTING AND RESERVING therefrom the BURIAL GROUND now within said bounds to be used for burying the dead and for no other purposes." Being the same premises which were conveyed to Judson HUSTED and Maude A. HUSTED by George N. BOWMAN and Olive A. BOWMAN his wife. ALSO EXCEPTING AND RESERVING from the above described premises a right of way which was granted and conveyed by the said Judson HUSTED to the Po'keepsie and Conn. Railway Company; which agreement for said right of way bears date the first day of November 1888." ---------------------------------------------------- I did find a 17 September 1880 deed to Mary HAWLEY from a Walter A. HUSTED and Betsey his wife - $700 - At the time this deed was made Mary HAWLEY was of BROOKLYN. This parcel was four acres and was located on the south side of the Highway leading from Hibernia to Poughkeepsie. ----------------------------------------------------- I found a surrogate file for a Mary R. HAWLEY who died at Millbrook 20 September 1912 but it does not appear this is Mary R. HAWLEY was one in the same with Mary Hawley ( Mrs. Lewis HAWLEY). This Mary R. HAWLEY who died 20 September 1912 appears to have been single as she left HAWLEY brothers, Titus, Alexander, Fred and Wilson and a sister Sade Hawley along with several nieces and nephews by the surnames of Dutcher, Puret (?),Coffin, Polhemus and Stowe - no children. ---------------------------------------------------- I'm beginning to wonder now if the "neglected tomb" was once part of a larger burial ground? How accurate the newspaper article was as to relationships between Lewis Hawley, Mary Hawley and Archibald Hawley Interred in the tomb? Is there any relationships between the Husteds and the Hawleys and maybe the Hicks since Seversmith says Mary Hicks m. Lewis Hawley, son of Nathan Hawley. I'm guessing now that Judson HUSTED must have died sometime between 1888 and 1898. Was Walter A. HUSTED related to Judson HUSTED? What was Walter's wife Betsey's maiden name - could she have been a HAWLEY or a HICKS. Was Maude, Maude (___?__) Husted the wife of Judson Husted or his sister - Could Maude have been born a Hawley or a Hicks? I wonder where they are all buried. The web tangles - anybody know any of these folks. Back to Seversmith to see if I can find a Husted connection to the Hicks or Hawleys and the drawing board and looking at some census. So much research, so little time and this isn't even my family.
