Hi Madge

I think you would have to start with your family and work backward to James
Smith. You will need to find something of fact for the connection. Since they
were in Pougkeepsie NY after arriving from Canada information should be
available on the family and perhaps a family folder at the archives regarding B, M
and D that occured in Poughkeepsie NY. William was B in St Armand, Quebec
according to one of the sites I listed below, but cannot be considered fact as
there is no source given.

NOTE: I cannot find a St Armand Quebec but I did find a St Armand Essex
County New York and this brings up a question already. St Armand is near the
border of Franklin County in upper northern New York State. There are a number of
Smith Families in the area during the 1820 and 1830 era. There is also a
William Smith and the oldest boy was William. Although the Presbyterian Church
records do not start until 1855 the Dutch Reformed (a Protestant) church was has
records until 1796. Very often the children were Baptized by any Protestant
Pastor in the area.

Although they do not mention a daughter/sister that does not mean that they
did not have one and if she married and had children it could be another
possible link to a family connection. Perhaps it was one of the sons who had a
daughter and that could also be checked out. A female child is not usually
referred to and most information given is in regards to the male line, so it might
take some searching. The Famioy History Centers have films for B, M and D in
various locality and if your living out of the area it might be worth ordering
the film as they charge a low fee and the reader is located at their libraries
and can be used free of charge.

Here are a couple sites that have some information, but there is no actual
source or documentation given to confirm it as fact. Since the younger son was
B in Pougkeepsie there probably is a Baptismal Record at a local church (or in
their archives) that would give the names of both of his parents and that
would give you a clue as to whom she was. Being Scottish I would look at the
Presbyterian Church located there (see below).. Another thing to look for would
be an Obit in the Poughkeepsie newspaper when the mother and father died which
might give her maiden Surname. If they used the naming patterns for the sons
William would be named after his paternal grandfather and Andrew would be
after his maternal grandfather (a couple possible clues).

It certainly sounds interesting and worth an effort to follow up on. Good
