Hi Ginny,

Yes, this is one of those mysteries that you feel you have to solve whether or not your own family is involved--it is just too intriguing!

Depending on the snow condition, I may bring my grandchildren up by you between Christmas and New year's to check out the Community Ground Cemetery again. Their parents will be in Amsterdam (Netherlands) so I will have to entertain them. They love trampling cemeteries with me.

Hi Barbara,

I agree the Briggs Survey would sure be interesting.
I'll have to look the next time I am at the Land Records Office - The Survey
was not filed with the Deed.
I'll have to check the Filed Maps listing and see if there is a listing for
the Briggs Survey.
This might be a bit challenging but it would seem that the survey might be
filed under the name of Lands of Bowman - since if I am interpretting the
deed right the property would have been surveyed when Bowman owned the land.

This has me so curious now because I wonder now if there are other burials
in the area since the deed reserves a "burial ground".

Found this George N. Bowman in the 1880 Census for Pleasant Valley with his
parents - I wonder if by the time 1889 rolled around he has wife named
Olive.

In the Pl. Vly. 1900 Census I did find a George N. Bowman b. Aug. 1863
married 16 years (married 1884) to Olive b. Nov. 1863 [Perhaps Olive Augusta
CASE see IGI Record below] with children Viola b. July 1895 and Raymond b.
June 1895 - Page 47B. A few doors away is an Edward Lawton - Page 47A who
may be the Notary Public who witnessed the Hawley - Allen Deed but I can't
find Mary Hawley unless she is the Mary Holley b. April 1837 widowed mother
of 1/0 Living - Page 47A - Could be the age and birth year in the census is
off for Mary - for the age it looks like the 73 in her age was written over
to be 63?????

By 1910 it appears George N. Bowman and Olive are living in Clinton - with
just Raymond at Home. Olive the mother of 2 with 2 Living so Viola is
probably married and living out of the household under her married name.

The Anthony Briggs survey would be a great thing to have--it would
pinpoint the location of the burial ground. Are surveys recorded in
Dutchess County Clerk's Office? This seems recent enough to still be there
if they are.
