I'm a bit confused about the history of Western NY.
I have been researching an ancestor named George E. Martin who lived in Akron, NY in the early 1800's.
As we know Akron, NY is in present day Erie County and that Erie County wasn't formed until 1821 (from Niagara County). My wife's uncle who I am picking up the research from, was able to obtain microfilm information from the 1803? census which had George counted in the Western Massachusetts Territory. Am I missing something here? Everything I have read to date does not mention anything about this part of NY being associated with MA during this time.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject or at least point me to where I can do further research?
Thank you,
Tom
