Subject: Need suggestions, Slack, Fall, Voorhees, Van Nest property in Fulton Co
Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 22:29:00 EST

Need suggestions, ideas on where to find information on property transactions
or the families mentioned--The following affect property in lots 77 and 78,
Sacandaga Patent--at the time the property was bought and sold it was in
Montgomery Co, apparently Amsterdam or Tribes Hill, now it's in the town of
Perth, Fulton Co. I had a search done at the Old Courthouse in Fonda a
couple of years ago, and some deeds were found. Does anyone have
information on any of these families, know where the property was/is?

I presume the property was purchased between 1800 and 1810. In 1801 Benajah
Slack and Benajah were in Chatham, Columbia Co, listed on the Chatham Road
tax list. In 1808 Benajah Jr. was bondsman for Peter Van Slyke, and Benajah
was listed as a farmer in Amsterdam. I have a 1816 mortgage deed in which
Benajah Slack Jr. sold property to George Van Nest and wife Jean, and Benajah
held the mortgage--since it was, I am told, common practice for a
father-in-law to hold mortgages for children I am wondering if there is a
family connection here. The deed defines the property and excludes 2 small
parcels previously sold to Nathan Wells and Coonrad Barker.

In 1818 Benajah Slack Sr. of Tribes Hill died and his will, written in May
and probated in September divided real estate into thirds, one third to his
son William who lived in Middleton, Delaware Co when he sold his portion to
John Voorhees on Feb 22, 1820, one third to his daughter Elizabeth and after
her death it was to go to her son Benajah Fauls, and one third to Rosel
(Roswell) Slack Jr. and Nathan Slack (my ancestor), grandsons of Benajah Sr.

Of the third that went to Roswell Jr. and Nathan:

on Mar 5, 1821 Sally Slack sold one equal undivided 1/12th part 47 acres
willed to Roswell and Nathan in the right of Roswell Slack Jr. deceased to
John Voorhees.

on Feb 7, 1822 Susannah Slack sold one equal undivided 1/12th part of 47
acres willed to Roswell and Nathan in the right of Roswell Slack Jr. deceased
to John Voorhees--And, was she the Susan Slack who married James Covert about
1822 and moved to Michigan?

on Aug 31, 1826 Barbara and Alden Lowden sold property bounded on one side by
the land of Hugh Santford and on another side by lands of Benjamin Fall and
on another side includes 8 acres bought by John Voorhees from Susan and Sally
Slack, sisters of Barbara to John Voorhees. Another deed on Sept 7, 1826
transfers property to Voorhees as well.

on May 3, 1828 Nathan who was then 21 (born May 2, 1807) sold 25 acres and 23
perches of the Slack farm.

on Nov 1, 1830 David S Fountan and Elisa his wife sold one equal 6th part of
the property to John Van Nest (Elisa/Eliza was sister to Barbara, Susannah,
Sally, Nathan and Roswell, Jr.)

I haven't found anything showing that Elizabeth or Benajah Fauls/Falls sold
property--I think that sometimes Benajah and Benajmin are confused, and
wonder if the Benjamin Fall who owned the land mentioned in the 1826 deed was
the Benajah mentioned in the will.

Nathan Slack settled in Lake Pleasant, Hamilton Co (married Samantha
Dunning). Nathan's sister Barbara and her husband Alden Lowden/Louden and
his sister Eliza and her husband David Fountain also settled in Hamilton Co,
Barbara in Lake Pleasant and Eliza in Wells.

It appears that most of the "Slack Farm" was purchased by John Voorhees.
Does anyone have information on him?

Any suggestions appreciated.
