You might try published notices. I have an index to the Geneva Gazette and a
John T Chapman of Geneva had two infant children die, one in 1813 and the
other in 1817; the same man sold his seat in the Presbyterian Church in
1814. Don't know if this is your man, as you don't say where he lived
[Ontario Co was a big place in those days, much bigger than now] and the
index doesn't mention a wife. But perhaps this will lead you to other
sources ... before the 1880s about all you'll find for marriages are
published notices and church records. Good luck.

Can anyone tell me the best place to look for marriage records in
Ontario County, Ny from 1815-1820. I did write to the Ontario County
Historical Society and they had no record. I am looking for the
marriage record of John Chapman and Jane Drake married in 1815. I'm not
sure if the date is correct. Their first child was born in 1820, five
years later, so I'm not about the date.
