The DAR books can also be found in many large libraries, try the main
library in Buffalo. If your aunt joined, the DAR would definitely have her
application which gives the lineage.

One of my ancestors joined the Continental Army in 1776 at age 41, signing
on for the duration of the war. He soon got sick and stayed back in NY
while his unit wintered at Valley Forge. After that he did guard duty
briefly and then he deserted. At least two women used him to gain DAR
membership, apparently your ancestor doesn't have to have served with
distinction.

Kathy...

I noted your recent posts on the NY Finger Lakes list that referenced a DAR
source on ancestry.com. My
father's sister spent a great deal of time proving our lineage so that she
could join this
organization. As a child I remember seeing her charts and somehow no-one in
our family can now find
any of them.

Will these DAR references allow me to trace my family using the information
I have from about 1844?
Does this require a membership in ancestry.com?

Thanks for your help.

The family name is Van Nostrand and we are from Ithaca.
