Subject: [NYGENESE] From the Genesee County History Department's Obit books
Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 16:29:27 EDT

Hi all,

The following are clippings from the Genesee County History Department's Obit
books. Most of the articles are dated, but some only contain the year, and I
assume that they were all from one of the Batavia newspapers, although they
don't state WHICH paper. All can be found at the Genesee County History
Department, and probably on microfilm at the Richmond Memorial Library in
Batavia as well.
Some of the subjects are my family, while others are just articles that I
inadvertently copied while getting the clippings on my family. I will label
my family clippings accordingly, and if anyone finds a connection, PLEASE
contact me, as I would LOVE to share info!!! If an article is NOT labeled as
my family, however, I would ask that you PLEASE NOT contact me in hopes of
obtaining further info, as I will have none!! These articles can all be
found in the archives of the list as well.
ENJOY!!!!

BERT M'ELVER

Death at Byron This Morning of a Prominent Young Business Man

Byron, Jan. 6 - Bert L. McELVER died at his home in this place at 1 o'clock
this morning, aged 30 years. Three weeks ago he was taken ill with
pneumonia, which attacked both lungs, and about a week ago, he successfully
passed the crisis. During all this time he had been in delirium and for the
last 24 hours suffered from hiccoughs. About 1 o'clock he sat up and when he
was laid down he was dead, his death being from heart failure.
Mr. McELVER was born and had always lived in Byron. When a boy he entered
the employment of SEAVER & HALL, general merchants, and afterwards entered
the employment of MOORE & SEAVER, remaining with them until the spring of
1889, when he and George H. RADLEY of Albion entered into a copartnership and
opened a general store here. The partnership continued until the fall of
1893, when Mr. McELVER purchased the interest of Mr. RADLEY and continued the
business for a few months, then selling a half interest to his brother, E.L.
McELVER. In April, 1896, he sold his remaining interest to his brother and
entered the employment of S.J. ARNOLD & Co. of Rochester as traveling man,
remaining with the firm until his last sickness. He was a member of Byron
Lodge, I.O.O.F., and Byron Tent of the Maccabees. He was a Republican in
politics and had held the office of Town Clerk ever since he reached his
majority, with the exception of four years, from 1889 to 1893, when he was
postmaster. He leaves a wife and two daughters, Edna, aged six years, and
Florence, aged 2 years, and is also survived by his father, mother, one
sister, Mrs. George G. POST, and three brothers, James H., William H. and
Edwin L. McELVER, all of Byron. A large circle of friends deeply sympathize
with the family in their sad bereavement.
The funeral will be held from the house on Friday at 2 p.m.
